Li- gnite reserves of 50 billion tonnes have been determined in the Rhineland basin. The lignite is deposited in three over- lying beds with a total average thickness of 40 meters. In the Garzweiler mine, the deposits lie between 40 and 210 meters beneath the surface.

About 140 pit lakes exist in Central Germany. These have resulted from lignite mining and are important parts of the post-mining landscape in the Central German lignite mining district. Their water quality is mainly influenced by the consequences of pyrite oxidation, i.e., acidification or results of natural or artificial neutralization.
The companies RWE, Vattenfall and EPH are owners or (in the case of EPH) potential buyers of lignite mines in the Rhineland and in Lusatia. The mining area of Garzweiler near Cologne has the biggest single lignite deposit in Europe. The region's lignite output and employment in the lignite industry have remained relatively stable since the early 2000s, although at quite a low level compared to GDR times [35,36]. Lusatia is now the second largest lignite mining district in Germany, after the Rhineland. Other industries in the region are much smaller.
Hambach Mine is part of the Rhineland Lignite Mining Region. It is a large open-pit coal mine operated by RWE and used for mining lignite. The mine currently has a size of 48 km² and got its name from the village of Garzweiler [] which previously existed at this location. The Central German mining district is located in the states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt in the former East Germany. It is the oldest of Germany's lignite mining regions. Until the 1960s, it was also the most important region, contributing between 40 and 50 percent to the total amount of lignite mined in Germany.
